  • Hello and Welcome!

Come on in... here you’ll find bits and bobs about us, The Larmours, our life, where we live, what we do, and most of all, about our biggest shared family passion – our travels. This is a record for us, a place for us to share pictures and ramblings on what we’ve done and where we’ve been, but you’ll find occasional blethering about other things too.

We met in Hong Kong, and since then have lived and worked all over Asia before settling in China, where our Saffy arrived and then moving to the UAE where Indy joined us. Since we met we’ve travelled – since we married we’ve been on an adventure – since we had kids it hasn’t stopped… ultimately, all our small travels were preparation for the big one – that one day we hoped to take – a gap year, a sabbatical, a break from the daily grind – and starting 2014 we took off on it..... across the world, and then on a road trip that has taken us to three continents so far.....

Grab a cup of tea and come exploring with us,
Kirsty, Tommy, Saffy and Indy xxxx

21 memories of our trip to Kerala

Warning – this is long – you might want to grab yourself a cup of tea!!!  Finally I’ve had a chance to sit down and go through some of our holiday photos – I can’t believe it was back in November that we went to India – wow. I was intending to put these into a series of posts as there are so many, but cos it’s been so long I think I’ll do it all at once. They’re just a few (seriously I could have shared hundreds it was such an awesome trip) of our snapshots – I don’t take my big pro gear on holidays – I have enough to carry with two small children!!!india02

india01I’m borrowing this idea from another photographer, but I thought I’d make a list of some of my most unforgetable memories about the trip – the good, the bad, the things that made it what it was….

21 memories of our trip to India….

  1. a 2am flight on an Indian budget airline perhaps wasn’t the most restful start –no sleep on broken chair, with baby on lap… plus turbulence – not a good mix for me – I felt like I’d been on a merry go round (which the kids were later on)!india06
  2. Cochin – the most adorable chilled, laid back little place – with fishermen, and islands and churches and people celebrating Eidindia04india05india03
  3. the girls looked like street urchins by day two – grubby faces, dirty fingernails and scuffed knees – but huge toothy smiles through it allindia13india12
  4. gardens – staying in homestays meant space for our garden deprived children to run around to their hearts content – making Mummy’s heart singindia08
  5. The three generations of this family who took us under their wings and made us part of their family for the few days we were with them – you don’t get hospitality like that just anywhere. Within half an hour of our arrival Saffy had had her hair brushed and re-plaited. Indy’s face had been washed and they’d been introduced to all the extended familyindia15india14
  6. falling into bed at the end of the first day – all four of us in one huuuuuuuuuge bed and just before drifting off to sleep, realising it was actually only 7pm back home in Abu Dhabi!
  7. food – homecooked, homegrown, fresh, healthy, tasty = singing tastebuds! (not to mention that Indians TOTALLY get vegetarianism!)india33
  8. colours – everywhere – India hits all 5 of your senses full on in the face and nothing more so than the vibrant colour everywhere, everywhere.india16india31india29
  9. water, water everywhere – which made everything lush and oh, so, green, greeeeeeeen….india21india30
  10. Transport – Part 1: auto rickshaws – we took more of them than any other mode of transport and every time we got in one Saffy sang for the whole journey – she loved them! And nothing is more wonderful than your child singing with joy when they enjoy something so much.india35
  11. Transport – Part 2 – Busses: the bus from Cochin to Aleppy – me, 2 girls on my lap, and 4 other women, all squashed onto a 3 person seat, and the way there are no barriers – food gets shared, songs get sung, chat is exchanged about destinations and journeys – no one complains – it is what it is…
  12. Transport – Part 3 – Trains: he trains – I’m a train junkie and love to take train journeys – there’s something so wonderful about train travel – so soothing – that you don’t get with any other mode of transport – I can sit and watch the world go by from a train window all day longindia24india34
  13. Transport – Part 4 – Ambassador cars: the feeling of being transported back to the days of the Raj (I know they’re probably not that old) – I feel like a little girl going in an old car!
  14. backwater boat trip – one of the best AED500 spent – ever! Peaceful, relaxing, stunning, restful, and all while being waited on by 3 boatboys who really could not have been more helpful. If you ever go to Kerala, you must NOT miss a boat trip!!india19india20india37Go to sleep having seen the sun go down like this…..india22and wake up to this….india23Bliss….
  15. Relaxing with a beer on the balcony or the beach listening to the waves of the Arabian Sea / Indian Ocean – and watching the girls do their sun dance as they waved goodbye to it.india27india28
  16. hammocks big enough for the whole family, or swings for the girls – made to make you relax…india17india25india26
  17. Shopping for textiles and handmade items at cooperatives where you knew the money was actually going to benefit the people that made the things you bought.india09india10india11
  18. Time – just having 8 uninterrupted days to spend together – with no email, no facebook, no work, no TV, no…. nothing but US time for the four of us.
  19. Watching Saffy climb a tree for the first time – simple pleasures which we had as kids that apartment living children don’t getindia36
  20. ankle bells that the girls got for being good on the boat, and not requiring us to jump overboard on a life saving mission – their giddiness as they jingle jangled as they ran around with their new anklets
  21. Smilesindia07– everywhere –india32welcoming people –india18I can’t wait to go back…..

Kirsty xx

Oman Road Trip

Originally posted at www.kirstylarmourblog.com

Anyone that regularly reads this blog knows that we LOVE to travel in my family, and I love opening my girls eyes to new places and experiences. This was such a different trip to what we usually do – this is really just a set of notes and snapshots (I never take my pro camera on holiday!!!) to help me remember what a fantastic trip it was – I forget far too easily, and how can it be that we’ve been back for 6 weeks already??

1. taking our own car was novel – we of course packed 5 times as much as we usually do when we have one backpack between us.Oman-1001

2. no TV – for a fortnight and the girls never even asked for it – in fact we stayed one guest house in Salalah which did have a TV and as we were packing up Saffy noticed it and said “Mummy did you know there was a TV in here- I didn’t!!!”Oman-1007

3. petrol – the first time we had to pump our own petrol neither of us knew how to get the petrol cap off (oh yes, what spoiled UAE-ers we are!)!!! And having to stop at every petrol station to fill up, in case the next one had run out – and 3 times having to charge pump mid fill because the pump we were at ran out!Oman-1027

4. camping – lots of fun – but for me, 2 nights at a time is enough!!!Oman-1029Oman-1017

5. camping on deserted beaches – one we drove along for 50km without seeing another car – amazing – oh and every morning they were covered in HUGE crabs too…. beaches, us and the crabs – fab!Oman-1018

Oman-10196. the night we stayed on a beach where we saw big cat prints – we’d read in the book that there were leopards in the hills above, but I’m pretty sure from the size of the footprints they’d made it down onto the beach too – cue sleepless night from Kirsty!!Oman-1011

7. lying on a deserted beach watching shooting stars with my sweetheart – perfection ♥Oman-1005

8. setting up camp on that deserted beach several hours earlier to find that it turned into a highway when word went round the nearby fishing village that 2 little blonde girls were sleeping there – I think we chatted to more Omani’s that night than the rest of the trip together!!Oman-1021a

9. taking a ferry to what Saffy named “the secret island” – we loved it there so much we stayed 3 nights! And the girls were delighted at the goats and camels taking the ferry with us!Oman-1023Oman-1024

10. the roads – were so polite – no one flashes you or beeps you and people slow down and let you pull out of junctions and they thank you when you let them pull out – it was the way road driving should be and was just an absolute dream!Oman-1020

11. hour after hour on beaches collecting shells with the girls – Saffy took her favourite ones to school to give to all her class mates – some totally stunning onesOman-1010Oman-1016

12. getting used to having to stop because camels, or donkeys, or goats wandered onto the road – even on the highways – and the fact that you could just stop on the highway and take pictures cos there was noone else on the roads anyway!Oman-1028

13. the coastline stretching down to the Yemeni border – wild beaches, rugged cliffs, blowholes, winding roads – just stunningOman-1015Oman-1013

14. Salalah, the land of frankinsense – I fell in love with it – it’s lush green mountains and it’s tropical plains, with coconut palms and fruit stalls lining the roads and a laid back vibe – it felt familiar, it felt like somewhere we wanted to spend some time – so we did…. oh and you can’t beat waking up and opening your curtains to see dolphins swimming past – the girls loved that.Oman-1008Oman-1014Oman-1030

15. not taking public transport meant much less meeting the people of the country – which was odd – I mean we still met lots of great people but there’s something about long bus or train journeys!!Oman-1006

16. the Arabian oryx reserve – with it’s amazing animals, and scientists passionate about keeping them safe – and our guide who drove out to our tent (which was in the middle of nowhere) at sunrise with fresh baked chapattis and jam for our breakfastOman-1003Oman-1004

17. Saffy, my little food tester who tried absolutely every food we put in front of her – and Omani food is great – a mix of Middle Eastern and Indian – yummy.. we ate VERY well!!Oman-1002

18. being invited into peoples homes, their schools and even to a wedding, the groom of which we met on the ferry leaving the secret island – he was heading to the mainland to buy 3 camels and 5 goats for his upcoming nuptials!!Oman-1022

19. the many varied landscapes we drove through – desert, mountains, salt flats, beaches, gorges, grasslands, tropical lushness, castles, forts, villages, towns – much of which was off road (and we couldn’t have managed without these 2 resources off road in the Sultanate of Oman,  and a website written by some long term Oman residents which was amazing)Oman-1009Oman-1026

Oman-102520. the girls, learning all the time, soaking it all up, remembering moments and treasuring them, living for days without TV or toys and not missing them in the slightest – who needs them when you can sing songs and play I spy and run wild on beaches and pick flowers and put your hands down crab holes and dance in sunbeams and climb up rocks and fly your kite?Oman-1031Oman-1012

We travelled over 4000km in 2 weeks, from Abu Dhabi down to Salalah in the south of Oman – and tried to explore as much as we could in between! That sounds crazy when I put it into words, but with wide, empty roads and plenty to see and do along the way it worked out just perfectly for us and whilst not the most restful holiday ever, it was just the adventure we hoped for.Oman-road-trip-map

Oman, I can’t wait to come back and see more…. until next time, Kirsty xx

Easter 2010 – Adventure here we come

(originally posted at www.kirstylarmourblog.com before we set off on out Easter 2010 road trip to the south of Oman)

We’re off on our holidays so please bear with me if you don’t get any response to an email or call – I’ll be back mid April and will respond then.  When I say “holidays” I’m not sure that’s quite what I mean – more of a road trip adventure and we’re not quite sure where we’re going or what we’ll end up doing… except that it’ll probably involve some climbing up huge dunes to fly kitesabu-dhabi-desert-03

some running and jumping all over dunesabu-dhabi-desert-04

driving through some landscapes like thisabu-dhabi-desert-02

and falling to sleep after sunsets like this….abu-dhabi-desert-01

I’ll update you on our adventure when we get back, Kirsty x
